The actual state of the raga in Hindustani music through examined data from discographies and written materials from the 1950s till today

3.Annotation on data

Before analyzing data, it is necessary to consider the following points.
① The discographies using here do not cover all recorded music.
② It should be considered that there are certain tendencies only on recorded medium as LP, Cassette, CDs by overdubbing, and short performances according to certain themes.
It usually takes one hour or so of stage performance though musicians used to perform a few minutes for SP records previously. Recording sessions were different from the actual stage performance. After appearing on CD, it became possible to perform much longer though musicians and producers had to consider the consumers’ choice. Therefore we must be aware that recorded music does not reflect actual stage performance.
③There are a lot of incorrect and inconsistent information on the names of raga, tala, style, performers. Consistency of information is required for keeping proper statistics. It takes a lot of time and energy.
Following are points to observe consistency.
・In spreadsheet work, the diacritic of the standard Hindi Romanized spelling is not used.
e.g.  ड→D、छ→CH、च→C、श्→S、ण→N、ष→S、ट→T、ठ→TH、ऋ→R
Accordingly there are words as shown below which seem different from general English spelling.
e.g. Bageshri→Bagesri、Mishra→Misra、Chandrakauns→Candrakauns、Desh→Des Gaudi→Gauri、Pancham→Pancam、Shuddha→Suddh etc
・The words with different spelling are adjusted.
e.g. Kanada、Kannda→Kanhra、Kausik→Kaunsi
・Compound words are separated into two.
e.g. Gunkauns、Jogkauns、Nandkauns→Gun Kauns、Jog Kauns、Nad Kauns
・Different expression of the same words are adjusted.
e.g. Darbari→Darbari Kanhra
 ・Misspelling are corrected.
e.g. Jalar Kedar→Jaldhar Kedar、Kaunhi Kanhra→Kaunsi Kanhra、Sohni Baar→Sohni      Bahar, Kohari Kalyan→Kuheri Kalyan(Kuheli=Fog), Jaitshrti→Jaitsri
・As words include "B" and "V"  which are mixed up in general in Hindi are adjusted.
e.g. Bibhas→Vibhas、Vasant→Basant
 ・"W" is  adjusted to "V".
e.g. Bilawal→Bilaval、Asawari→Asavari、Barwa→Barva、Marwa→Marva
・Lengthening spelling of English are adjusted.
e.g. Bhoopali→Bhupali、Shree→Sri
・Words which can not be name of raga in general are removed.
e.g. Bahuli、Bihu、Wasadari、Farghana、Suddh、Bihu、Manavi、Sanjari、Sindh、Shat
The list of correction is shown in Table-1.

④Almost one third of records do not give names of the raga.(Table-2)

Table-2
The reason for not stating the name of raga name can be for the following reasons.
1. In general, in light classical music like Thumri, Tappa, Dadra, Bhajan, Gazal, the name of raga is not given but the first phrase of text of the song is. As shown in the table, 580 records of vocal music in DHKM are included. Breakdown is shown as follows. Abhang(11), Thumri(14), Dadra(21), Bhajan(112), Gazal(138), Kirtan(31).
It shows that such light music used to be recorded more often than "heavy" classical music like Khyal in the early days. On the other hand, classical music records with the names of ragas are more often recorded in the CD age. It means that the change in media brought this tendency.
2. If a percussion instrument like the tabla or pakhavaj are featured on records, the name of the raga is not given.
3. Even though the content is classical music, sometimes other titles such as “Millennium The Finest Collection Indian Classical” or “Musical Journey Through India” are put instead of the name of raga.
4. For promotional purposes, sometimes different titles are put on the records even though the performance is classical music.
e.g. "Caravan", "Nostalgia - Melodies To Caress Your Heart & Soul", "Sweet Romance.
5. Name of ragas is also not given in fusion music records.
