The actual state of the raga in Hindustani music through examined data from discographies and written materials from the 1950s till today

6. Total number of raga including on books

Ragas that appeared on books are added to those that are on discographies for counting the total number of ragas. 671 ragas are on books (Table-5). 581 ragas with an "*" are those that show the scale constitution. See Table-7
Since there was a lot of incorrect and inconsistent signage on the names of raga on books, all were made consistent. There are ragas listed below which have two or three different names, or those which have the same name with though with a different scale constitution. These are included in the list.

・Two names with the same constitution
Audav Todi=Chaya Todi、Desi=Desi Todi、Desi Kanhra=Revti Kanhra、Gaud Bilaval=Bilaval Malhar、Kedar Malhar=Savni Kedar、Miyan Ki Sarang=Tenseni Sarang、Prabhat=Prabhat Bhairav、Pradipaki=Patdipaki、Revati=Revati Kanhra、Samjh=Samjhka Hindol、 Saurashtratank=Saurashtra Bhairav、Saveri=Saveri Bhairav、Shobhavati=Suddh Gunkali、 Tilak Sarang=Mirabai Ka Sarang、Todi=Miyan Ki Todi、Vijayanagari=Vijay、Yaman Kalyan=Jaimini Kalyan、
・Three names with the same constitution
Binna Sadja=Kaushikdhvani or Hindoli
・Two different versions with the same names

・Three different versions with the same name

After deleting overlapped names, the total number of ragas that appeared on discographies and books listed in Table-6 is 986. As 29 uncertain names of raga are included, the actual number may be 957. As noted earlier, the scale constitution of 581 ragas can be shown. (Table-7)
The number 986 (or 957 or 581) is generally not far from what books noted variably as "only about 300" (B.C.Deva), "may have been only in the hundreds"(George Ruckert), "only several hundred ragas are in use"(Ravi Shankar), or "close to 500"(Wim Van Der Mee).
