The actual state of the raga in Hindustani music through examined data from discographies and written materials from the 1950s till today

10. Frequency of appearance of raga on two discographies

Data of both discographies shows the state of ragas for almost half century since 1950. It is difficult to judge a tendency only by surveying the data though we can guess to what extent ragas have been enjoyed in this period.
 Table-22

is the Raga ranking according to the frequency on both doscographies. It may be possible to know to some extent a certain trend from this table. Table-23 shows more clearly the actual situation. Table-24 extracted the higher 50th place of Table-23. As Deva noted as "A musician can, perhaps, render about fifty with some degree of confidence", this list must serve as a reference for performers.

The scale constitution of Bilaskhani Todi, Gara, Kalavati, Mand, Sivranjani, Sri and Tilang that came out by this list for the first time are shown at attached sheets.

Table-24
The names of ragas in this table might ring a bell with those familiar with Hindustani music. Still it is interesting that Bhairavi overwhelms other ragas. Bhairavi may be the raga that Indians like most.

On the other hand, it can be said that there are a considerable number of ragas that are rarely played. Table-23 is the list of 281 ragas that appeared twice. Conversely there are 345 ragas which are recorded only once out of the total 626 ragas on two discographies.
