2.Materials

One of the reference materials used is A Discography of Hindustani and Karnatic Music (DHKM) edited by Michael S. Kinnear, which includes recording data of 2,700 LPs, cassette tapes released between 1950 and 1984. As the editor noted, the oldest recording was made in the 1930's, included with data before the 1950's.
 Other reference materials are CD lists of internet online stores on several websites (IDisc). The largest shop was Khazana.com, which had 989 selections of instrumental music and 623 selections of vocal music in 2004. Unfortunately, this website has been closed since then.

　Most of the websites are not up at present. The reason may be due to current big changes in musical distribution. Since the iPod appeared in 2001, the state of music listening has changed. Since then people have begun to listen to music recorded on the hard disks or downloaded online on the internet rather than through CDs. So with the decrease in demand of CD as the main medium, previous music distribution companies are struggling hard to survive.
 Now it has become possible to confirm data used for this paper from the websites mentioned. However, as it is worth surveying them for studying the trend of the raga, I would like to discuss based on data surveyed in 2004.
 The following table shows the numbers of records on both the discographies and examples how the information of records were put on them.
